How to run an Instagram giveaway that is easy to verify
The best giveaways have rules you can check from the comments alone. "Follow us, like this post and tag two friends" is popular because the tag part leaves a trace: every valid entry is a comment with at least two @mentions. Follows and likes cannot be read from a comment list, so treat them as conditions you verify manually for the winner only (open the profile, check the follow) rather than as filters for everyone. Keep the giveaway open for a clear window, 3 to 7 days works well, state the end date and time zone in the caption and say how and when the winner will be announced.
In Giveaway Picker those rules become switches: One entry per user ignores repeated comments from the same account (turn it off if you promised "every comment is an entry"), Mentions required drops comments with fewer @tags than you asked for, and Required hashtag or keyword handles "comment #done" or "tell us your favorite color" mechanics. A bonus entry keyword rewards people who shared the post to their story or used a second hashtag, without complicated multipliers.
How to export the comments from your post
Paste from the post on desktop
Open the post on instagram.com in a desktop browser, click "View all comments" and the "+" button until every comment is loaded, select the whole comment area with the mouse and copy. Paste into the tool: it understands the desktop layout where the username is on its own line, followed by the comment and the "Reply" and "likes" lines, and it also understands one-line formats such as @user comment or user: comment.
Third-party exports
Comment export tools and browser extensions usually produce a CSV or JSON file. Drop it in the Upload tab: columns called username, user, author or name and text, comment or message are matched automatically, and a plain list of names (one per line) works as well.
The official Graph API for business accounts
If your account is a Business or Creator account connected to a Facebook Page, Meta's Instagram Graph API can list every comment of a post. Giveaway Picker Pro does this directly from your browser with a user access token that has the instagram_basic, instagram_manage_comments and pages_read_engagement permissions. The token is never sent anywhere except to graph.facebook.com and is kept in memory unless you choose to remember it on your device.
Pick fairly and announce the winner
Once the eligible count looks right, choose the number of winners and alternates and press Draw. The roulette or countdown animation is nice for a screen recording you can post as a Reel or Story; the result is the same either way, because the winners are derived from the seed, not from the animation. Save the verification hash and seed with your announcement. If a winner does not reply within the deadline you set (48 hours is common), move on to the first alternate instead of drawing again, so nobody can accuse you of re-rolling until a friend won.
Announce with the certificate image or the generated caption, tag the winners and ask them to DM you. Never ask for payment details or passwords in a comment, and warn your followers that you will not contact them from a different account; impersonation scams are the most common problem after an Instagram giveaway.
Legal basics
- Include official rules: who can enter (age, countries), start and end dates, how winners are chosen and contacted, the prize and its value.
- Instagram's Promotion Guidelines require a complete release of Instagram by each participant and a statement that the promotion is not sponsored, endorsed, administered by or associated with Instagram. Never say "Instagram sponsors" or imply an affiliation.
- Age and regional restrictions matter: alcohol, gambling-related or adult prizes are limited or banned in many countries, and some countries (for example Italy, Brazil and several US states) regulate promotional contests or require registration or a notary.
- No purchase necessary where sweepstakes law applies; a prize that depends on buying something may be a lottery.
- Keep the participant list, seed and hash for a reasonable time in case a result is questioned.
Frequently asked questions
Is Giveaway Picker free?
Yes. Pasting or uploading comments, all eligibility rules, up to 3 winners plus 5 alternates, the verification hash and the winner certificate are free with no sign-up, for up to 500 eligible participants per draw. Free certificates carry a small "Giveaway Picker · free" badge. The one-time Pro upgrade removes the badge and adds up to 20 winners, unlimited participants, automatic Instagram import, draw history and custom certificate branding.
How do I get the comments from my Instagram post into the picker?
Three ways. Open the post on instagram.com on a desktop browser, load all comments, select and copy them, then paste into the Paste tab: the tool detects the username at the start of each comment. You can also upload a CSV, TXT or JSON export from any comment export tool; columns named username, user, author or name and text, comment or message are detected automatically. Pro users with an Instagram Business or Creator account can import the comments directly through the official Instagram Graph API by pasting the post URL and an access token.
Is the draw really random, and how can my followers verify it?
Each draw generates a seed with the browser's Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), which is cryptographically random. The winners are derived from that seed over the alphabetically sorted list of eligible usernames, and the tool publishes a SHA-256 verification hash of that list plus the seed. Anyone with the same participant list and seed can replay the draw in the tool and get exactly the same winners and hash. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is nothing to tamper with.
Can it pick several winners and alternates?
Yes. The free version picks 1 to 3 winners and 0 to 5 alternates (backup winners in case someone does not claim the prize or broke the rules). A user can only win once per draw, even if they left several comments or have bonus entries. Pro raises the limit to 20 winners per draw.
Does it work for Facebook, TikTok, YouTube or Twitter comments?
The parser is built for Instagram usernames, but any list of participants works: paste one entry per line, upload a CSV from the platform's export or add names manually. The rules (dedupe, required mention, keyword, exclusions) and the fair draw are platform-independent. Automatic import is Instagram-only.
Is Giveaway Picker affiliated with Instagram or Meta?
No. Giveaway Picker is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Instagram, Facebook or Meta Platforms. Your giveaway must comply with Instagram's Promotion Guidelines (including a complete release of Instagram by each participant and an acknowledgement that the promotion is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by Instagram) and with the laws of the countries where it runs.
